The 7 Areas Of A Successful Life & The Power of Your Values

The Path To A Complete, Fulfilled, Successful Life.

Many life coach books and time management books talk about this.

There are basically 7 areas in your life that you want to balance out.
If you manage and balance these 7 areas well, you live an accomplished, happy, successful life with a sense of peace and satisfaction that carries over in your whole being and in all parts of your life.

I particularly learned a lot from the following 2 books, which inspired this blog:

Focal Point (Brian Tracy)

Awaken The Giant Within (Tony Robbins)

I always very strongly recommend these 2 books to all my musician friends or students who want to reach their fullest potential in life or in music or both.
I read “Focal Point” once every year to realign and refocus my goals every year.
I read “Awaken the Giant Within” a couple of times already.

Interestingly enough: both these books had been recommended to me many years ago by guitar students of mine.
This is one of these cases where the student becomes the teacher and the teacher becomes the student. 🙂
Both these students also happen to be very happy human beings who are very successful in all areas of their life.

These books help to resolve the issue described in the following recognizable story of a musician’s life.

The Predictable Scenario of A Musician’s Life.

You probably had this happening to you:

You spend a lot of time practicing: as a result, you see really great progress in your playing.
Meanwhile: all goes well, you see amazing progress, you perform often with your band… but then your partner voices dissatisfaction at some point, feeling that you’re never home or always practicing.

So now, you decide to spend more time with your partner, who is happy again.
However: you start having a bit lesser gigs than usual because you’re not spending as much time anymore on your band’s marketing.
In addition: you haven’t had as much progress on your guitar anymore lately.

You decide to get back to practicing more, and that goes well for a while… till… partner is feeling neglected again.

After a while, you start feeling like the circus artist who is keeping plates up in the air on sticks, running around like crazy to keep them from falling on the ground.

Tell me you know what I’m talking about. 🙂
We’ve all been there before as musicians, right? 🙂

You focus on 1 thing, and it gets better, but then you need to hurry up to the next thing that is about to fall apart to make that better again too.
Thank god: everything you focus on always improves…
… but… there is only so much you can focus on at any given time.

If this sounds all too familiar to you: this blog is for you.
Life is all about balance. There are 7 areas in your life that you need to balance to live a completely happy fulfilled life.

The 7 Life Areas That You Want To Balance.

These are really the 7 areas that make up a human being’s life.

A. Business And Career

B. Family & Personal Life

C. Money & Investments

D. Health & Fitness

E. Personal Growth & Development

F. Social & Community Activities

G. Spiritual Development & Inner Peace

For each one of those 7 areas, you want to sit down and figure out:

  1. The right order in terms of importance of these 7 areas in your life.

What is most important to you?
If you’re a family man who wants to spend a lot of time with your closest ones, you probably wouldn’t have business and career on top of your list.

If you’re a musician with amazingly ambitious goals that include wanting to become known worldwide, you probably would want “business and career” on top of your list.
In that case “family and Personal Life” would probably be lesser of a priority to you.

  2. What are you hoping to achieve for each one of these 7 areas in the bigger picture of your whole life?

When you turn 98 years old and you look back at your life: what do you want to be known for or what would make you feel like you really succeeded in life for each of these 7 areas in your life.

    This could be anything.

For “business and career” for example, it could be: “I want to have toured with my own band on every continent at least once”.
Or it could be: “I want to have released an album”.

For “family & personal life”, it could be:
“I want to have friends I am close with on every continent”
“I want to find the love of my life… my soulmate”
“I want to have 3 kids”

For “health and fitness”, it could be:
“I want to run at least 1 marathon”
“I want to still be limber and really fit when I turn 85”

And so on… you get the idea.

  3. Why do I want the things I want in each of these areas of my life? Why are these goals or accomplishments important to me?

This is an important question, if only because many people have their priorities misaligned, very often without being aware that they do till it’s too late.
This can lead to a lot of wasted time, focusing on the things you don’t want as much as you think you do.

These questions will prioritize your goals, dreams, and wishes in terms of importance.
Oftentimes, when questioning their goals, people find that something they thought was really important to them, upon investigation turned out to be much less important than they thought.

Answers to that question could be:

“I want to find the love of my life because I want someone to share all my successes with and grow old with.”
“I want 3 kids because I miss having a big family and I love that feeling of being surrounded with a lot of loved ones all the time”
“I want to tour the world at least once so I can combine my 2 great passions: traveling and earning my income doing music”
“I want to become very wealthy so I have the money to accomplish all my dreams”

  4. What are the values and qualities that are most important to me for each of these 7 areas.

Your values in your business, for example, could be excellence, or effectiveness, or enthusiasm, or self-discipline, or hard work, etc.

If you have a conflict of values, you will have to expend a lot of time and energy on overcoming resistance caused by the conflict.

    For example:
If you value security as one of the most important values that you live your life by, but you more than anything want to go on a world tour and become a professional musician, you’re in for trouble.

If however, you place family as the most important thing in your life, then your inner value of security would align really well with your ideal future of a family man with a big family where everybody feels safe and loved.

When your values are aligned with your goals, then those values drive you to greater success in accomplishing that goal.
Your values are the fuel that drives you.
That is why it is so important that you find out who you are and what drives you.

You need to know what the values are that make up the fabric of your whole being.

One way to figure this out is to juxtapose values and meditate over which one of the 2 is more prevalent in your being:

      Personal growth vs. security
      Adventure vs. comfort
      Joy vs. self-discipline.

You might find that for who you are as a person, that:

      Passion trumps comfort
      Freedom trumps security
      Success trumps intimacy

Only if you ask yourself these questions, doing an effort to be really honest with yourself when looking for the answers, will you truly find out your core deepest values that you want to live your life by.

To help you with this, here’s a thorough list of values that will come in very handy.
    A List Of Values

  5. What are the knowledge and skills I will need to succeed in all these areas?

For each one of your goals that make up the fabric of your ideal future vision, you want to research what the necessary skills and knowledge are that you would have to acquire to succeed.
The decision that would go with that, is whether you would want to spend time on acquiring those assets yourself, or if you would hire someone who already possesses the necessary expertise to help you accomplish that vision.

  6. what specific habits will I have to develop to become the person who will achieve his life’s dreams?

Successful, wealthy people, have different habits than you are.
Question all your thoughts and habits, and see if you can replace them with habits that are more conducive to achieving your life’s mission.

    For example:
If you are in the habit of worrying regularly: you want to get rid of this habit.
Successful people don’t waste their focus or energy on things that keep them from achieving their dreams.

If you are in the habit of checking your Facebook often, or watching TV every day, or socializing a lot with colleagues or getting easily distracted or complaining, or thinking negatively, and so on: change those habits or replace them with more productive, more focuses, more successful habits.

Choose to be the person you want to become right now.

  7. What specific actions are you going to have to take or are you taking to realize your ideal future vision?

Don’t delay what you could do right now to bring you one small step closer to the vision of your dream life.
Map out all the tasks, work, actions, and decisions you will have to make to accomplish your dream vision of the 7 life areas.

Make it happen. Be proactive. Push the boundaries.
    Take action!

  8. What is your ideal future vision?

The specific question you want to ask yourself to figure this out is: “If my life were perfect 5 or 10 years from now, how would it look like?”
The more detailed you answer that question, the more likely you will fulfill that vision.

Ask yourself: “If I were in the dictionary, what would it say under my name?”
Make a list of all the elements of your identity you would love to have.
You have the power to add or change anything in your identity.

Think of your heroes and write down all the things you don’t have in your personality, and that you would like to be
Write down a plan of action that will cause you to know that you’re living your new identity.

Who do you want to be? Who do you want to become?
How are your 7 areas to be organized? What do you want to be known for?

What is it, when you look back at your life the day you die, that will make you feel: “I’m ready! My life is a masterpiece and there is nothing anymore I have not experienced yet or that I still need or want. My life has been perfect and exactly the way I wanted. I can die in peace now!”.

THAT is what you need to figure out for the 7 areas.
